Just imagine you’re a breeder and most fond of Sables and Tricolors. And imagine you have a lovely Tricolor bitch who has produced three litters already, but there was nothing to your liking. “Next time” you’ll be lucky, you think. You are persuaded to use a Blue Merle stud dog and hope for that nice Tricolor bitch-puppy. However, there’s only one bitch in the litter and she turns out to be a…….? Exactly: a BLUE MERLE !!!!

What would you do? Right…..you would keep that Blue Merle bit of fluff and think: we’ll just wait and see how she will turn out. She can always have nice Tricolor daughters. That’s how one things as a breeder.

Well… that Blue Merle bitch-puppy was Sibil and oh boy, was she something special. The moment she opened her little eyes I fell for her. What a lovely face! I never liked Blue Merles, but I loved my little Sibil. Then something really awful happened: Sibil started to grow and wow…what un unbelievably ugly thing she grew up to be! As breeder one would be absolutely ashamed but mothers love their kids no matter how ugly they might be and Sibil’s ugliness only made me love her more.

It took forever before this blue little darling reached adulthood and started to look a bit like a Sheltie. While her brother Norman was already showing off in the showring, this little lady stayed home just being the “ugly sister”.

Slowly, but surely a thin little layer of coat started to appear. Very slowly her skull started to grow and those enormous ears (she looked like the Flying Non!)  and long mussel came into proportion. But those eyes….they remained the same. I’m glad, however, that the black spot under her right eye (for the observer on the left) has disappeared, as now Sibil got a more gentle and sweet expression.

After two or a bit more years (hallelujah) there stood a really nice bitch. A little oversized perhaps, certainly not worth showing for a specialist judge, but her head was okay, a little large ears and rather funny, but there it is, that’s quite common in Blue Merles. She has excellent movement and good angulations….overall a nice bitch for breeding.

Unfortunately, Sibil turned out to have a hormone problem and therefore I had to have her spayed; no puppies from my Sibil.

Despite all this I love my Sibil to pieces. She is my one and only. My girl who treats everything and everybody with such care! She adores other (small) animals, children and even sad little adoption dogs which I take into care for the Rescue. Sibil helps all those dogs to adapt. She cleans all the eyes here (mine included), lets me know where the other dogs have ticks or possible injuries which need my attention. Sibil is very attentive and caring and full of love.

I take Sibil along wherever I go and she always attrackts attention. Everyone laughs at Sibil and she is always in the spotlight. Wherever I go with her, we always meet people who want a chat. What is it that makes my Sibil so special….????
