Gwensigor's Killer Queen
*Cailin* Born: 10-09-2001 - 25-03-2010 Sire: Shemaur Secret Pact (Hedges) Dame: Bell Flower Flora Donja (Floortje) 35 cm, Ablatio and Coloboma (severe CEA problems)
As I already mentioned on Floortje’s page, I had 2 litters by Floortje. One of them by my own South African import dog Hedges. Quite a nice litter, but unfortunately there were severe eye-problems. I nearly had a heart attack when the eye specialist told me and he advised me to sell all the puppies as pets. And so Cailin also went off as a pet. After a while of being a breeder you get used to not hearing much after selling the pups, but I always keep in mind that as long as I don’t hear anything, everything is all right So after a year or so I lost Cailin out of sight, but I knew she was having a good life. I remember once being told over the phone that Cailin had “Collie Nose’ but she was recovering well and there was no need to worry. Well…. OK then. Thanks for calling. And then it was March 2008 and the Phone went. Cailin’s owner told me: “We are divorced now and I no longer have time for my two Sheltie-girls, come and pick them up please”. And so I took in Cailin and her Sheltie companion Troy. At first sight I was shocked! Both bitches were as pigs so fat ! They couldn’t even walk normally on their poor sore feet, had a total lack of energy….they weren’t dogs, they were invalids..!! So I decided to keep them both at first. The former owner had given me their medical charts and after reading them I understood what had happened. Both bitches had severe problems with all sort of allergies and skin problems. For years they had been treated with high doses of steroids over long periods of time. No wonder they were so poorly and so fat. So first I put them both on a diet and started exersizing them to build up some muscules and give them more energy. I soon discovered Cailin to be a terrific footy player, she loved my mowing machine and became my co-driver. After a few weeks I started taking them along on my regular walks and you could see how they loved it! To help Troy with her allergy problems I started her on Arcenicum Album (homeopathic remedy). This was just my guess , but turned out to be a good one! Troy’s problems disappeared! Cailin’s problems however were far more severe and after several visites to my vet we desided to disgard her problems as immuun problems and so I put Cailin on a low daily dosis of steroids. A dosis high enough to help her get rid of the infections, but not too high to interfere with her methabolism or make her tired. After all this I had both bitches spayed and found a new home close by, and now Troy stays here every year during holidays. Of course Cailin stayed here with me. Not only because of her medical problems, but she was born here and I love her to pieces. She is truly the sweetest thing you have ever seen. She is also a perfect patient and whatever treatment she needs, it’s no problem. Cailin loves a ride in the car, walking, playing (with Forrest) and she’s always happy and cheerful. But most of all she just loves to play with the ball. Last year I entered her at a funshow and her result was a “Good”, which was very fair of the judge. Cailin loved the show scene and I enjoyed handling her. OK, she’s a mongrel, but I’m very proud to own her! Sadly last December something went completely wrong in her little body. I even had her on a drip for a weekend, as she was so poorly, she couldn’t even stand anymore! Blood results told us (the vet and me) that her liver had nearly given up. The course isn’t known, but seeing the results I don’t have to look any further: Cailin won’t be with me much longer. Only thing now to do now is take things one day at a time. She has her good days, but also every now and then a bad day. With a lot of LTC I hope I will be able to give her a lot of good days and in the end I will make sure she will pass on without pain or suffering. I’m only too glad she’s back with me, because for the last 2 years Cailin has been a DOG again !!!
